Patrick Mahomes’ Mom Takes Side in Harrison Butker Controversy
Randi Martin—the mother of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes—appears to have thrown her support behind Harrison Butker following his controversial commencement speech at Kansas’ Benedictine College.
The Kansas City Chiefs’ kicker and devout Catholic came under fire on social media after making remarks that many deemed sexist and homophobic.
During his speech at the Catholic liberal arts college, Butker emphasized traditional gender roles, suggesting that women should be wives and homemakers rather than pursue careers or academic accomplishments.
The 28-year-old also faced backlash for condemning LGBTQ+ Pride month, referring to the annual celebration as a “deadly sin.”
On Friday, Butker defended his speech during a gala held by the Catholic home school organization Regina Caeli Academy, of which he is a board member.
Speaking at the event in Nashville, Tennessee, Butker suggested the backlash was a sign that “timeless Catholic values are hated by many.”
“Over the past few days, my beliefs—or what people think I believe—have been the focus of countless discussions around the globe,” he said. “At the outset, many people expressed a shocking level of hate. But as the days went on, even those who disagreed with my view points, shared their support for my freedom of religion.
“In my seven years of the NFL, I have become familiar with the positive and negative comments. But the majority of them revolve around my performance on the field.
“But, as to be expected, the more I’ve talked about what I value most—my Catholic faith—the more polarizing I have become.”
Butker added that the decision to talk about his Catholic faith publicly was a conscious choice, one he “does not regret at all.”
Randi Martin—who goes by her married name of Randi Mahomes on social media—is an evangelical Christian and influencer in her own right, with a combined 280,000 followers across Instagram and X.
The 51-year-old shared a snippet of Butker’s latest speech to X on Sunday, where her post has received over 184,000 views.
“Amen,” she captioned the post, along with the praying hands emoji. However, her apparent support for Butker divided people in the comments section.
“Ah, the ‘Christians are persecuted’ argument. Poor, poor crusaders,” commented Chase Hamernick.
“Nothing good about this horrible man,” said Barbie Hines.
“I hate people using god name to spread hate,” wrote @bookowl1918.
“Could never respect someone who tried to put women in a box,” said Pam Yates, while @BrowBron_ told Mahomes to “Get back in the kitchen, then.”
Others praised Mahomes for backing Butker, with Steve Beary writing: “God Bless you.”
“Randi. I’m now a fan of yours! You are awesome,” commented Tanner.
“I KNEW you supported Butker! Thank you for being a strong Christian woman,” said Dawn Moore.
“Sad so many hate on him,” wrote Wmac.
“How dare anyone vilify this man for having his own beliefs,” said Michael Dineen. “People took this and twisted it into what they wanted it to be as usual to fit their reason for wanting to bully or cancel him.”
Some of Butker’s teammates have also commented on controversy. Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce said that while he doesn’t agree with Butker’s views, he respects his right to express them.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes echoed Kelce’s sentiments, acknowledging Butker’s right to his beliefs while distancing himself from the content of the speech.
“There’s some things he said I don’t necessarily agree with, but I understand the person that he is, and he’s trying to do whatever he can to lead people in the right direction,” Mahomes said.
The Chiefs head coach Andy Reid also weighed in on the drama, telling reporters during a press conference on Wednesday: “Everybody is from different areas, different religions, different races, and so we all get along, we all respect each other’s opinions. It’s a great thing about America, man.”
However, the NFL has made its stance on Butker’s speech clear. In a statement released on May 17, Senior Vice President Jonathan Beane said: “His views are not those of the NFL. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger.”
